The Jeopardy! Teen Tournament has been missing from our screens since 2019, and for a lot of families, that absence has been felt. The tournament launched in 1987 and became a February sweeps staple, often drawing the show’s highest ratings. Alex Trebek called it his baby and credited it with reinforcing America’s learning ethic. After seven years off the air, executive producer Michael Davies says the show intends to bring it back. The only question is where it lands, whether that’s a streamer, a network prime-time slot, or part of the regular season. He’s also considering reviving Kids Week, last seen in 2014.
Ask the people who competed and they’ll tell you it was about more than winning. Claire Sattler, the 2018 champion, and Avi Gupta, who won in 2019, describe a greenroom full of teenagers who finally found their people. Lasting friendships came out of it, along with a romance or two. Some contestants walked away with fans of their own. That’s a rare thing for a game show to give a kid.
So a comeback seems less like nostalgia and more like an open door. The platform and timing are still up in the air, but the show’s leadership is saying the right things.
