John Lydon Says Sex Pistols Reunion Is Impossible After Legal Battle Over Wife's Illness

The Sex Pistols might be one of punk rock’s most iconic bands, but don’t expect to see the original lineup reunite anytime soon. John Lydon recently told Rolling Stone that the chances of a Sex Pistols reunion are in the“minus infinities,”and his reasons reveal a conflict that cuts much deeper than typical band drama. The breaking point came when his former bandmates took him to court over music rights for an FX documentary series called Pistol, all while his wife Nora was battling Alzheimer’s disease.

What makes this story particularly difficult is the timing and the lack of communication. Lydon says his bandmates never told him about the documentary project for three years, and then rather than having an honest conversation about how his music would be used, they forced the issue into the courts. The legal fees alone cost Lydon roughly $10 million just in the first week, money he desperately needed to care for his dying wife. More than the financial burden, Lydon is hurt by the complete absence of respect and compassion from people he once created history with. None of them reached out during his family crisis, and that’s something he says he simply cannot forgive.

Both the Sex Pistols and Lydon’s other project, Public Image Ltd, have North American tours launching in September 2026, but they’ll be traveling separate roads.
