A Yuba County judge has rejected a plea agreement that would have limited the sentence of Christopher Rodgers to just one year in county jail plus probation for killing three people in a deadly Highway 70 crash near Marysville in July 2025. Judge Julia Scrogin stated that the severity of the case and Rodgers’criminal history warrant state prison time. The three victims were 17-year-old Michael Mallinson Jr., driver Clint Jon Waddell, and Waddell’s wife Salma Julissa Ramirez-Lujano. Two others, including a 1-year-old child, suffered serious injuries in the head-on collision.
What makes this case particularly troubling is Rodgers’prior DUI history. He has four previous DUI convictions on his record, and one of those crashes occurred just one month before the fatal Marysville wreck. That proximity raises serious questions about why someone with that pattern of dangerous driving was still behind the wheel. Investigators determined Rodgers drove into oncoming traffic; his account of events shifted from claiming he fell asleep to saying he was looking at his phone. No alcohol was detected in the crash, but the distraction or fatigue behind the wheel still resulted in three deaths.
Rodgers pleaded guilty to three felony counts of vehicular manslaughter and two felony counts of reckless driving causing injury. The next hearing, scheduled for Monday, will either produce a new sentencing agreement acceptable to the judge or set the case for trial. Victims’families made clear during Monday’s hearing that they agreed the proposed one-year deal was insufficient. What do you think a fair sentence should look like in a case like this?
