The DC Universe just got a whole lot more interesting.“Lanterns,”the new series starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, debuts tonight at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max. The show follows two Green Lanterns, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, as they investigate a suspicious death here on Earth. It’s not your typical superhero romp. Critics are already calling it a gritty, grounded mystery with a“True Detective”vibe, and it’s holding a 90% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
This is the third series in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe, and it’s got some serious star power attached. Kyle Chandler, who you know from“Friday Night Lights,”steps into the role of Hal Jordan. Aaron Pierre takes on John Stewart. And if you caught the“Superman”movie earlier this year, you’ll recognize Nathan Fillion, who plays Guy Gardner here. The show was created by Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof, so the writing pedigree is solid.
Eight episodes will air weekly, with a new one dropping every Sunday at 9 p.m. ET through October 4th. If you’ve got HBO or a Max subscription, you’re all set. If not, it might be time to call your friend with the password. Are you planning to tune in tonight, or are you going to let the hype build for a while?
