Kevin Feige didn’t sugarcoat it. Marvel’s president recently admitted that the Mahershala Ali Blade reboot is officially dead, and he owned the failure directly. During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Feige called himself a“gigantic loser and failure”over the project that never got off the ground. It’s the kind of brutal honesty you don’t usually hear from someone at his level in Hollywood, and it reveals just how messy even massive studio productions can get when the creative pieces don’t fit together.
The Blade reboot had been stuck in development since it was announced at Comic-Con in 2019. Seven years is a long time to have a project just sitting there, spinning its wheels. Two different directors came and went. Multiple release dates came and went. The 2023 writers’strike threw another wrench in the works. Through all of it, Feige said the screenplay never reached the level of quality Marvel needed to move forward with confidence. They didn’t want to phone it in. They wanted something special, something worthy of the character and worthy of the audience’s time. When the script didn’t get there, they made the hard call to stop pushing.
What’s fascinating about all this is the timing. Wesley Snipes popped up as Blade in Deadpool&Wolverine last year, and suddenly everyone was talking about the original Blade movies again. That nostalgia factor probably made the failed reboot feel even more irrelevant than it already was.
