Modesto Pumps the Brakes: Speed Limit Cuts Coming to Multiple Streets

Modesto’s city council is about to make some serious moves on street safety, and your morning commute might feel a little different soon. The council is expected to vote Tuesday on a series of speed limit changes designed to slow traffic down across several key corridors in town.

Here’s what’s on the table: Coffee Road between Claraina Avenue and Scenic Drive would drop from 40 mph to 35 mph. Paradise Road between Carpenter Road and Martin Luther King Drive would see a bigger cut, sliding from 35 mph down to 30 mph. And Martin Luther King Drive itself, running from Maze Boulevard to Paradise Road, would decrease from 30 mph to 25 mph.

The city’s push comes on the heels of serious traffic incidents, including hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter charges that highlight how dangerous streets can become when speeds get out of hand. Lower limits on high-traffic residential and commercial corridors are a proven way to reduce severity of accidents—when crashes do happen at 25 mph instead of 35, the difference between a fender-bender and a tragedy can be measured in feet.

Not every street is getting slower, though. Pelendale Avenue between Dale Road and McHenry Avenue is set to see a 5 mph speed increase, suggesting the city is being thoughtful about where safety concerns are highest rather than just broadly capping speeds everywhere.

If the vote passes Tuesday, drivers heading through these zones will need to adjust their habits. It’s a reminder that traffic safety isn’t just about enforcement—it’s about building streets and speed limits that match the neighborhoods they run through. Whether you think it’s the right call or just another frustration during rush hour, Tuesday’s vote could reshape how you navigate Modesto.
