Teachers in Natomas are sounding the alarm, with the possibility of a strike looming if their demands for a new contract aren’t met by December 10. Representing over 600 educators who’ve been without a contract since June, the Natomas Teachers Association is raising their voices—and their chants of “We can’t wait!” can be heard loud and clear outside the school district headquarters.
Parents, including Ashley Battle, are standing firmly alongside them, passionately arguing that educators are underpaid and pivotal in shaping students’futures. “You want them to support everyone else’s child, but you don’t want to help them support themselves?” Battle exclaimed during a recent board meeting, highlighting a common sentiment among those fighting for better compensation.
Union President Nico Vaccaro has also weighed in, urging the district to tap into its reserves to boost teacher salaries. However, the district has pushed back, stating that reserves should not be used for ongoing salary or benefit increases. With over 90% of NTA members signing a strike readiness petition, the stakes are high.
As tensions rise ahead of the upcoming negotiations, it remains to be seen whether the district will take decisive action, or if teachers will be forced to march for the support they rightfully deserve. Can education systems truly afford to overlook their most vital assets?
