Netflix has released the first photo of Melissa McCarthy and Clive Owen in character as Patsy and John Bennett Ramsey, and the internet has plenty to say. The two star in“The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey,”a new drama premiering December 10 that revisits the 1996 killing of six-year-old JonBenét in her Boulder, Colorado home and the media storm that followed.

For McCarthy, it’s a sharp turn away from the comedy roles she’s known for. She said she loves Patsy and hopes the series gives the family their humanity while telling the story. The cast also includes Garrett Hedlund, Alison Pill and Chris Bauer as the officers who worked the case. Patsy Ramsey died of ovarian cancer in 2006 at 49, and John Ramsey is 82 today. Their son Burke settled a $750 million defamation suit against CBS in 2019.

The case remains one of America’s most famous unsolved murders, which is exactly why a star-studded retelling is bound to spark debate. Some folks see it as a fair look at a family that was judged in the press long before any courtroom. Others wonder whether a child’s death should be entertainment at all. Where do you stand on this one?
