Sacramento Commuters Brace for Weekend Freeway Chaos: Here's Your Full Closure Map

If you’re planning a weekend drive through Sacramento, Caltrans just handed you a roadblock—literally. Major overnight closures are hitting Interstate 80 and Highway 50 from Friday through Sunday, and if you’re not paying attention, you could find yourself stuck detour-hunting at midnight.

Here’s what’s going down: The Interstate 80 Rehab project is racking up serious weekend work, which means anyone heading eastbound on I-80 or Highway 50, or trying to connect between the two, needs to plan ahead. Friday night’s closures kick off at 9 p.m. and stretch through Saturday morning. Sunday gets even more aggressive, with some closures starting as early as 8 p.m. Key trouble spots include the Westbound 80 to Eastbound 50 connector (the major interchange point for anyone trying to cut across the valley), Jefferson Boulevard off-ramps, and Harbor Boulevard access points. If you’re stuck on these routes at night, you’re looking at extended delays while crews handle critical rehab work.

But that’s not all. The“Fix50”project continues its push toward completion, and next week brings fresh lane closures to Highway 50 from 26th Street all the way to the Interstate 5 interchange in downtown Sacramento. Monday through Wednesday, crews are closing lanes 5, 6, and the auxiliary lane westbound starting at 8 p.m. Then Thursday and Friday, they’re flipping the script and shutting down lanes 1 through 4. Final striping, joint seals, electrical, drainage, and landscape work—the kind of stuff that keeps the highway functional for the long haul—happens during these closures.

The takeaway? If you’ve got weekend plans or a weeknight commute next week, leave extra time and consider alternative routes. These closures are nighttime work, so if you’re a late-night driver or an early morning commuter, check Caltrans updates before you head out. And if you’re thinking about making that drive during closure windows, don’t. The detours will eat up more time than you save.
