Sandra Bullock Opens Up About Harassment Early in Her Career and Her Return to Comedy

Sandra Bullock has spent three decades as one of the most recognizable stars in Hollywood, but the road there was rougher than most fans ever knew. In a new conversation with Jennifer Aniston for Interview magazine, Bullock said she spent her early years in New York auditioning for, in her words,“every pervert that existed,”and that some of those auditions included being asked to drop her pants.

She didn’t walk away. Bullock said the fear of never working again, something most working actors carry, pushed her to keep grinding instead. That grind eventually led to blockbusters, an Oscar for“The Blind Side,”and a nomination for“Gravity.”She also revealed that she deliberately stepped away from romantic comedies, a shift she credits to the 2004 film“Crash,”choosing dramatic roles that let her stretch as an actress.

Now the pendulum is swinging back. Bullock says she wants to focus on comedy again, and her timing could not be better.“Practical Magic 2,”reuniting her with Nicole Kidman, arrived in theaters Sept. 10, bringing a wave of nostalgia along with it. It’s a reminder that some careers are built on talent, but staying power comes from something deeper.
