Sandra Bullock is known for playing strong, capable women on screen, but in real life, she just admitted that strength almost cost her everything. On Amy Poehler’s“Good Hang”podcast, Bullock opened up about the years she spent caring for her late partner, photographer Bryan Randall, during his battle with ALS. Randall passed away in August 2023 at age 57, and at his request, Bullock kept his illness completely private.

Bullock described herself as“always the caretaker”and admitted she’s not good at asking for help. But the toll of managing Randall’s care, raising her children, and keeping it all together took a serious toll on her own health. It wasn’t until her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, intervened and warned her to prioritize her own wellbeing for the sake of her kids that Bullock realized something had to change. She called it a“big wake up call”and credited her sister along with“a few angels”for stepping in to help carry the load.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking revelation was Bullock’s admission that she began grieving Randall four years before his death.“My person left a lot earlier than the body left,”she said. She also noted that caretakers are an“underserved”group, a sentiment that will resonate with anyone who has cared for a sick loved one. Now, with time passing, Bullock says her daughter is encouraging her to date again. It’s a reminder that life continues after loss, and that caring for yourself is part of caring for others. Have you ever been in a caretaking role? What helped you get through it?
