In the seaside town of De Panne, Belgium, more than 70 aspiring avian impersonators gathered for the sixth annual European seagull screeching championship. Contestants from 15 different countries welcomed visitors to this quirky event where they all tried to channel their inner seagull. Dressed in outlandish, bird-themed costumes, the competitors entertained an enthusiastic crowd that cheered each attempt, recognizing the artistry (and absurdity) in their efforts.

Participants earned points from a panel of judges based on the quality of their screeches and the overall performance. With a maximum of 15 points for the imitation and five for the theatrics, the competition turned into a fun spectacle that sought to change public perception of the often-maligned birds. Event organizer Claude Willaert noted that the sounds of seagulls often evoke fond holiday memories, so why not celebrate them?

This playful tradition aims to shift the narrative around seagulls, commonly viewed as nuisances along the coastline. Instead, it proves that these creatures can be associated with joy and laughter rather than irritation. Who knew that mimicking a bird’s call could spark such community spirit—and perhaps a few new vacation memories along the way?
