A sequel toThe Family Stoneis officially in the works, and most of the original cast is coming back. Searchlight Pictures announced the project over the weekend, with Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney, Craig T. Nelson, Luke Wilson, Claire Danes, Tyrone Giordano, Elizabeth Reaser, Paul Schneider, and Brian J. White all returning. Writer-director Thomas Bezucha is back as well, and production begins in New York this fall. No release date has been announced yet.
The new film picks up 20 years after the Stone family’s matriarch passed away. The family reunites for Christmas, and things get complicated when the father arrives with a new love interest. That storyline carries extra weight now, since Diane Keaton, who played Sybil Stone in the 2005 original, died of pneumonia in October 2025. Bezucha has said the loss shaped his writing, and the cast has spoken warmly about the chance to work together again.
For anyone who’s had a Christmas movie on repeat for the last two decades, this one brings both nostalgia and a good reason to grab the tissues. It’s a reunion, a tribute, and a holiday story all at once. What’s the movie your family watches together every single December? Drop it in the comments.
