The daytime television community has endured wave after wave of heartbreak. From sudden accidents to long battles with addiction and mental health, the soap opera world has lost some of its most beloved talents in the past several years—each loss a stark reminder of the very real struggles that exist behind the glamour of the screen.
The most recent tragedy struck in June 2026 when Paul Avery, known for his role as Hughie, the bartender at Foxy’s, on All My Children during the 1980s, and his wife Sheila Avery, died in a devastating house fire. The couple’s daughter, Kyle Avery, confirmed the loss on Facebook, expressing gratitude to the Blairstown Fire Department for their efforts and sharing a poignant reflection on her parents’love:“We loved them so much, and they loved us so much, and nobody ever had to wonder if that was so.”Paul had remained in his All My Children role for 12 years, leaving an indelible mark on the show.
But Paul Avery’s loss is just one in a growing list that spans the last several years. In September 2023, Billy Miller, the Young and Restless alum, died at age 43. His mother later shared that the star had“surrendered his life”after battling bipolar depression. An autopsy revealed he died by suicide from a gunshot wound. Fellow All My Children costar Chrishell Stause paid tribute on Instagram Stories, writing of her grief and gratitude for their time together. Miller had appeared on multiple major shows including General Hospital, The Bold and the Beautiful, and The Young and the Restless, making him a fixture in daytime television.
The pain extends far beyond individual tragedies. Tyler Christopher, a General Hospital star, died in October 2023 at age 50 from positional asphyxia due to acute alcohol intoxication. David Gail, known for Port Charles, passed away in January 2024 at 58 from anoxic-ischemic encephalopathy following a cardiac arrest linked to drug intoxication including amphetamines, cocaine, ethanol and fentanyl. Alec Musser, also from All My Children, died by suicide in January 2024 at age 50. Jeffrey Carlson, who made history as daytime TV’s first transgender character, Zoe Luper, on All My Children, died in July 2023 at 48. Robyn Bernard, a General Hospital alum, was found dead in an open field in San Jacinto, California in March 2024 at age 64.
In December 2025, Anthony Geary, one half of the iconic Luke and Laura couple from General Hospital, passed away at 78. His husband, Claudio Gama, told TV Insider that the loss was a shock, while Geary’s former costar Genie Francis, who played Laura, shared a deeply personal tribute, writing:“No star burned brighter than Tony Geary.”
These losses span decades and causes—from accidents and health complications to mental health crises and substance struggles. Each actor left a mark on daytime television and in the hearts of viewers who grew up watching them. Their deaths raise difficult conversations about the pressures of the entertainment industry, mental health support, and the human cost behind the roles we watch on screen. The soap opera family continues to mourn, and their legacies remain part of daytime television history.
