Trump Claims Iran Officials Mocked Obama Over 1.7 Billion Dollar Payment

During the G7 Summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, President Donald Trump made a bold assertion about what Iranian officials really think of his predecessor. Trump claimed that officials in Iran have little regard for Barack Obama, alleging they called him a derogatory name when discussing a controversial 1.7 billion dollar cash payment the U.S. made to Iran in early 2016.

The timing of that payment has been a lightning rod for criticism since the Obama administration insisted it wasn’t connected to the Iran nuclear deal. Trump brought it up again while sitting with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, using it as ammunition to argue his own Iran negotiations were far superior to anything Obama could have achieved. According to Trump’s account, Iranian officials were astounded when the plane full of cash arrived, and they allegedly laughed at Obama over the transaction.

This comment comes just days after Trump announced a ceasefire deal with Iran that he says will reopen the Strait of Hormuz. However, the peace appears fragile at best. Trump has already issued threats of additional bombing campaigns if Iran doesn’t satisfy him with how they implement the agreement.

The irony here is worth noting: Trump spent considerable time criticizing Obama’s handling of Iran while simultaneously offering his own version of a deal. Whether Iranian officials are any happier with Trump’s arrangement remains to be seen. One thing’s certain—public diplomacy apparently takes a back seat when you’re trying to score political points on the global stage.

What’s particularly striking is how Trump framed the conversation. Rather than letting negotiations stand on their own merits, he chose to invoke what he claims Iran’s leadership said about his predecessor in private. It’s the kind of move that dominates headlines while raising questions about the credibility of backroom claims and the broader trajectory of U.S.-Iran relations.
