West End's Sunday in the Park With George Canceled After Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey Exit

The 2027 Barbican revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park With George has officially been canceled, and the reason comes down to two stars choosing themselves. Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey, who shared the screen in Wicked, were set to headline the London production. Grande stepped back first, saying she needed a break from public scrutiny following her Eternal Sunshine Tour. Bailey announced his own exit on September 1, calling the musical a passion project and making clear his support for Grande never wavered. Producers initially planned to push ahead with casting talks, but on September 14 they confirmed the Barbican production will not move forward as scheduled.

The news lands hard for West End fans. Star-powered Sondheim revivals are big draws, and losing both leads left the production without the names that made it a headline. That said, Empire Street Productions still holds the rights to the show, and there’s talk of a possible 2028 staging if the pieces come together.

So what do we take from this? Even the folks at the top of the mountain get worn down. Taking a step back to breathe isn’t failure. It’s wisdom. Shows can be revived. People need the space to be revived too.
