Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is hitting theaters to massive presale numbers, but the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy has sparked a heated debate about historical accuracy and representation. Critics, including Elon Musk, have claimed that casting a Black actress violates the ancient Greek description of Helen as blonde and pale-skinned. But when you actually look at what ancient Greek literature says about Helen’s appearance, the picture becomes much more complicated.

Denise McCoskey, a classics professor at Miami University and author of Race: Antiquity and Its Legacy, explains that ancient Greek writers rarely provided detailed physical descriptions of any characters, including Helen. The adjectives applied to Helen, such as“golden”or“sparkling,”were likely meant to convey qualities of personality or presence rather than literal physical appearance. Even more revealing, McCoskey notes that the Greek vases depicting Helen actually show her with dark hair, consistent with how Greek artists typically portrayed Greek women. The whole concept of ancient Greeks being“naturally blonde”didn’t emerge until the 1920s and 1930s, when certain groups began developing racial theories and claiming cultural connections to classical history.

What the ancient Greeks actually cared about was Helen’s complexity as a character. She represented debates about power, agency, gender, and the moral consequences of war. These thematic elements are what matter for a successful film adaptation, not whether an actress’s appearance matches a modern, invented idea of what Helen“should”look like. The real question worth asking is whether Nolan’s film captures Helen’s character in a way that resonates with today’s audiences. What aspects of Helen’s story do you think are most important to preserve in any adaptation?
