Flights Grounded: How a Winter Storm Wreaked Havoc on Travel Plans Nationwide

A winter storm is sweeping across the United States, bringing snow, ice, and howling winds, and with it, havoc for travelers everywhere. Over 12,000 flights were canceled this weekend as airlines scrambled to respond to the rapidly worsening conditions. Sacramento travelers are not immune to the chaos; they’re facing long delays and cancellations while trying to connect to their Southwestern or Northeastern destinations.

At Sacramento International Airport, the usually bustling terminal is filled with anxious travelers checking flight statuses and rearranging their plans. Mark Williams, one such traveler, found out his flight was delayed while en route to the airport. Another passenger, Jamie Lichter, is now eight hours behind her original schedule to Chicago—every traveler’s nightmare as they try to get to their destinations.

Southwest Airlines has been particularly affected, warning customers about delays at more than 40 airports, especially in Texas, where Dallas-Fort Worth has more than 700 cancellations to report! Even if Sacramento hasn’t been directly hit by the storm, the airline urges all passengers to double-check flight statuses. After all, it’s better to know early than to show up at the airport only to find your flight is grounded, leaving you pondering your next move—like perhaps binge-watching your favorite shows at the terminal instead!
