Justice Arrives Three Years Later in Turlock Stabbing Death

Three years can feel like an eternity when you’re waiting for answers. For the family and friends of Dylan Ray Dooling, that’s exactly how long they’ve had to carry the weight of an unsolved murder—until now. On Friday, the Turlock Police Department announced it had finally filed a murder charge with the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office in connection with Dooling’s death, marking a significant milestone in a case that has defined the department’s commitment to persistence and thorough investigation.

The night of June 2, 2023, started like any other for the 17-year-old who had just graduated high school. He was leaving a house party around 10:45 p.m. in the 2000 block of North Daubenberger Road between East Tuolumne Road and East Hawkeye Avenue when a group of males confronted him. What followed was a brutal attack—a fight erupted, and Dooling was stabbed at least once. His friends immediately called 911, but despite being rushed to the hospital, he didn’t survive his injuries. In an instant, a young man’s entire future was erased.

What makes this break in the case particularly notable is the patience and determination it required. Detective Frank Navarro and his team spent three years chasing leads, conducting follow-up interviews, and reviewing evidence. There were no quick wins, no dramatic arrest within days. Instead, the detectives methodically built their case, understanding that getting it right mattered more than getting it fast. As Detective Navarro put it,“Dylan was a young man who had just graduated high school and had his whole life ahead of him. Our goal has always been to pursue the truth and seek accountability for what happened to him.”

The suspect—who was a minor at the time of the stabbing but is now an adult—is currently in state prison for an unrelated crime. California law prevents the release of their name since the alleged crime occurred when they were underage, but the filing of charges represents a turning point. Turlock Police Chief Jason Hedden emphasized the emotional toll this case has had on the broader community:“The loss of Dylan deeply impacted his family, friends, and our entire community. While nothing can undo that loss, our department has remained committed to pursuing justice.”

This development serves as a reminder that justice doesn’t always move quickly, but dedicated law enforcement can eventually deliver it. For Dooling’s loved ones, this charge offers something they haven’t had in over a thousand days—the possibility of accountability and closure. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Detective Frank Navarro at 209-664-7319.
