Monkey Business at UC Davis: Allegations Fly As Animal Rights Group Sues

A federal complaint has emerged against UC Davis, stirring controversy at its primate research center over allegations of animal welfare violations. The watchdog group, Stop Animal Exploitation Now, claims serious injuries were inflicted on monkeys during their research practices, resulting in multiple failed inspections by the USDA.

The incidents described in the complaint are shocking: a monkey sustained injuries from an overheated injection, while another lost two fingers after a cage escape led to a brutal fight with a 13-year-old macaque. To make matters worse, the complaint highlighted inadequate enclosure sizes for three housing units, raising questions about the proper treatment of research animals.

UC Davis staunchly defends its practices, stating that animal research is beneficial to human health and strictly regulated. But as the dust settles, one can’t help but wonder: are the animals receiving the care and respect they deserve, or is this just another case of the tail wagging the dog?
