Randy Travis Hears His Voice Again: The AI Song That Made Him Cry

Over a decade after a stroke stole his ability to sing, Randy Travis got something back he thought was gone forever—his voice.

The country legend turned to artificial intelligence in 2024 to recreate his vocals for a new song,“Where That Came From,”marking his first musical release since the 2013 stroke that left him unable to speak or perform. The moment Mary Travis, Randy’s wife, played the finished track for him was nothing short of transformative. She described the scene to Us Weekly at CMA Fest presented by SoFi in Nashville earlier this month: Randy sat there puzzled at first, his head dropped, then came up. He smiled. Then he teared up.

“When they sent it to us, I remember it like you remember 9/11,”Mary, 68, told the outlet, capturing the weight of hearing her husband’s voice after so many silent years. She admitted she“bawled”too—a moment that transcended the typical AI-in-music debate and became something profoundly human: a second chance.

The idea came from Cris Lacy, chair and president of Warner Records Nashville, who proposed using AI to help Randy return to recording. The Travises sent vocal stems from Randy’s active recording years to a team in London, who rebuilt his voice with meticulous care. Kyle Lehning, Randy’s longtime producer, then spent hours in the studio with Randy himself, fine-tuning every sound and tone to match how Randy would’ve sung them if he could. Session musicians were brought in, and the song was cut the traditional way—a hybrid approach that honored both technology and craft.

Mary acknowledged the tension here: Randy wishes nothing more than to sing with his own voice, and AI can be“a slippery slope.”But for him, it represented something bigger than himself.“There’s nothing more in the world than Randy would rather do than be up on that stage singing with his own voice, and God knows the world misses this voice more than anything,”she said.“There will never be another one like it.”Randy committed to the project only because he believed it could demonstrate what AI could be at its best—not a replacement for human artistry, but a tool that honors it.

The success of“Where That Came From”led to another AI track,“Horses in Heaven,”released last year. But the real gift comes later this year: a new album pulling from Randy’s vault—music he recorded before his stroke that’s never been on an album before. No AI. Just Randy, in his prime, finally heard by the world.
