When addiction grips someone you love, watching from the sidelines is devastating—especially when you’re a public figure and the world’s watching too. That’s the reality NeNe Leakes has been navigating with her son Bryson Bryant, who landed back behind bars after failing to meet the terms of his probation.
According to jail records obtained by TMZ on Friday, June 19, Bryant has been held in a Georgia jail since May 1 after being booked for allegedly failing to meet probation conditions and failing to pay child support. His bail is set at $27,000. The probation violation traces back to his July 2023 arrest, when he was found with fentanyl in his possession in Lawrenceville, Georgia. At that time, Bryant faced multiple charges including possession of a schedule II controlled substance, loitering/prowling, and giving a false name to a law enforcement officer after he allegedly told police he was his younger half-brother, Brentt Leakes.
Though his drug charge was dismissed as part of a plea agreement, Bryant was sentenced to 12 months of probation with strict conditions: a $500 fine, 40 hours of community service, and mandatory random drug testing. According to court documents, he failed to fulfill any of these requirements—a clear indication that the legal system alone can’t solve addiction.
NeNe Leakes opened up about her son’s struggles during a July 2023 episode of the podcast“Reality With the King,”speaking candidly about a mother’s helplessness in the face of addiction. She explained that Bryant“needs rehabilitation”and“a lot of counseling,”noting he’s been to rehab multiple times only to relapse. The reality star, now 58, was honest about her limits:“As a mom, just to watch it is—my hands are tied. You know, he’s 31 years old, he’s an adult. He has three children, three beautiful children who I adore. He has a wife. [There’s] not much that I can do.”
What stood out most in her candid remarks was her acknowledgment of a hard truth many families facing addiction miss: recovery can’t be forced from the outside.“I have spent so much money to get Bryson where he needs to be, but every time I sent him off, I said,‘You are giving your ass up and we are sending you off.’But I learned through counseling myself that he has to say,‘I am ready to go,’not me making him go,”she shared.“So until Bryson is ready to make a change, there’s nothing I can do.”
That’s the crux of it—money, connections, and maternal love can open doors, but only the person struggling can walk through them. For Bryson Bryant, that moment of readiness hasn’t arrived yet.
